Join Jan Longwell from Longwell MacDonald to explore their work at Homage to Maybeck. Situated in the La Loma Park neighborhood, the landscape was shaped to complement the rich Arts and Crafts aesthetic of the house's 1906 Bernard Maybeck design, who was best known for the Church of Christ, Scientist in downtown Berkeley and the Beaux-Arts style Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco.

While little of his original garden remained, Longwell MacDonald crafted an outdoor space that reflects his signature eclecticism, layering natural elements with architectural forms. Inspired by Maybeck’s love of redwood, textured stucco, and reflective water pools, the garden features a series of intimate sitting rooms, areas for vegetable and fruit tree cultivation, and a Bavarian-style diamond-patterned fence. The result is a dynamic interplay between structure and nature, honoring Maybeck’s vision through plantings, materials, and spatial composition.
